Prepare to cozy up with spiders, centipedes, butterflies, and bees, to name just a few! In Little Learning Labs: Bugs for Kids, Mississippi State University associate professor, extension entomologist (bug expert), and educator John W. Guyton shares his knowledge and excitement about the world of bugs. Discover experiments, hunt-and-catch and citizen science initiatives, and arts and crafts projects that teach about bugs’ physical characteristics and behavior, and how they affect agriculture, health, and water quality.

You’ll also find helpful tips on how to safely handle common insects, and how to easily identify bugs that shouldn’t be held, pet, or touched.

The popular Little Learning Labs series (based on the larger format Lab for Kids series) features a growing list of books that share hands-on activities and projects on a wide host of topics, including art, astronomy, geology, and math—all authored by established experts in their fields. Each lab contains a complete materials list, clear step-by-step photographs of the process, as well as finished samples. The activities are open-ended, designed to be explored over and over, often with different results. Geared toward being taught or guided by adults, they are enriching for a range of ages and skill levels. Gain firsthand knowledge on your favorite topic with Little Learning Labs.

Little Learning Labs: Bugs for Kids

Insects and other arthropods outnumber all other animals combined. More than 95 percent of all animals may be insects! Insects are incredibly successful, and research suggests they have at least a 450-million-year record of survival on a changing and periodically hostile planet! The pocketsize critters even survived the dinosaurs in, essentially, their current form!

Begin Your Bug Adventure

Every great adventure begins with good preparation. This unit equips you with a few essential techniques. We begin by organizing your field notebook and learning a technique for sketching insects. We will consider first aid for bites and stings followed by an experiment with ants. Much can be learned about caring for an arthropod or insect pet.

Preserving Insects

Preserving insects is very important, because it records their history. For instance, notable drops in bumblebee populations over the past fifty years in England and the northeastern United States have been discovered to be related to the change in land use.

Most Common Insect Orders

In this unit we will get to know a few insect in the orders with the largest number of insect species. This will also prepare us for further insect study in later labs.

Other Arthropod Adventures

Insects are the most abundant arthropods, but there are others you will encounter and enjoy getting to know. Arthropod means “jointed foot.” These insects have segmented bodies of more than one part; some have many legs, an exoskeleton, and are cold blooded. Arthropods include insects, spiders, centipedes, millipedes, scorpions, ticks, shrimp, barnacles, crabs, and many more.

Bug Art & Science Projects

In this unit, we blend science and art to make a lot of fun. From making a wasp nest to rearing your own butterflies and comparing honey, get ready to put the knowledge you’ve learned to us —and to have a blast doing it!

papier-mâché Was Nest!

Wasps were making paper before humans knew how to write! When we started making paper we made it just like wasps do—grinding wood to a pulp, adding water and chemicals, and flattening or shaping the mixture. Let’s make a paper wasp’s nest.
